Historically the area immediately behind Wells quay consisted of a series of
narrow lanes or 'yards’ connecting large cargo sheds, often used as maltings. The Barkers Yard
development has been designed and specified in conjunction with North Norfolk District Council's
Conservation Architect with the sole purpose of creating a 'landmark' entrance to this unique
coastal town.
Materials have been carefully selected: contrasting bricks, from The Traditional
Brick Company, weathered-style red and blue Norfolk pan-tiles, slate to some roofs and some
Douglas Fir cladding. Selected homes will be coated with Keim Royalan paint. This is an
extremely hard-wearing mineral silicate used successfully in various coastal locations in
recent years and is in perfect harmony with the existing street scene.
