Delve deep into Norfolk's past with free heritage open days

At Sowerbys we're always enthralled by heritage buildings and the part they played in our county's past.

If you want to delve deep into the history and culture of our wonderful county, then get ready for ten unmissable days of free events allowing you to do just that!

With an array of open days, tours, talks and online events to get stuck into between 10th-19th September, Heritage Open Days is a great opportunity to learn more about the heritage of Norfolk.

Each September thousands of volunteers across the country invite the public to experience local history, architecture and culture, and what’s even better is, it won’t cost you anything!

But what events are going to be taking place in Norfolk? Here’s a few highlights…

Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse will be opening their doors for their annual Open Day, offering free entry to visitors for this years Heritage Open Days.

Explore the history behind the workhouse museum, head down to the real working farm and visit the animals and enjoy the 50 acres of gardens and grounds in beautiful Norfolk countryside.

When: Sunday 12th September

Take a guided tour of Norwich Cathedral where you’ll learn about the lives of those who worked there for the Benedictine monks back in the 1200’s.

Whilst you’re there, why not make the most of your visit and take a look at the stunning architecture of the building.

When: Friday 10th September 

Take the opportunity to discover the history of the Hunstanton lighthouse.

Go down to the dungeon if you dare, then climb the stairs to the top of the tower and enjoy the wonderful view over the wash, all whilst learning its history.

Join the team at one of the most elegant country houses in East Anglia for a guided walk across Felbrigg’s rolling parkland, woods and lake.

Learn about the wildlife and the work of their passionate conservationists who are doing an amazing job at supporting the ancient trees and restoration of the River Bure.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a keen gardener or an explorer, why not take a trip to Pensthorpe and enjoy its 700 acres of beautiful Natural landscape.

From its famous gardens and nature hides to the vast lakes and sculpture trail, there’s something for everyone and will be fun for all the family.

When: Monday 13th September

Having been home to the Bedingfields’ for over 500 years, you’re invited to explore the fascinating history of this beautiful country house.

Discover the moated manor house filled with portraits and treasured objects and take your time to wander around the wonderful array of gardens and the estate.
