Published: 01/09/2021This week we're talking to Adam who sells his cleverly handcrafted spoons, as you might have guessed... he does, however, also offer paddle boarding, archery and axe throwing classes, which you probably didn't!
See what he's got to say about his fantastic handmade wooden items, demonstrations and workshops below.
What is your name?
My name is Adam Flack and my wife, Sabrina and I run 'Spoons by Adam', which is predominantly a wooden crafts based business; as the name suggests I carve quite a lot of wooden spoons!
Where are you based?
I live in Hoe, a small village near Dereham.
How long has the business been going?
We’ve been running the business for a couple of years now and its expanded a little to incorporate a few additional things; I use a ‘pole lathe’ to turn small wooden items using leg power rather than electricity and love to use hand tools for most of my work.
What does the business offer?
I sell most of the things I make, run spoon carving courses as well as green wood working demonstrations at events throughout the year but in the summer months diversify a little and run Paddle boarding sessions as well as Archery and Axe throwing.
Sabrina has taken up pyrography - artistic burning of pictures on wood which has been very well received and a great way to use off cuts of wood from my other projects. I have an interest in traditional hand tools and really enjoy the pace of work and tranquility that comes from their use.
During my spoon carving courses people often comment on how meditative the process can be. I think a lot of people are surprised at how much effort goes in to carving your own spoon and I often hear back from people at the joy of using something they’ve made, or seen me make. I think that joy and appreciation is something we often miss these days with the abundance of cheap, mass produced items available with the ease of a button click.
