Get your garden ready for summer

Published: 07/06/2021

As the weather has improved and with summer almost upon us, people are beginning to spend more time enjoying their gardens and outside spaces again.

Here we have put together some tips for how you can get your garden prepared for the summer months and outdoor entertaining. From cleaning your outside furniture to feeding your lawn – is your garden ready?

Give your lawn a new lease of life

Your lawn may need some TLC after a long winter and if you want it to stay green and luscious throughout the summer months, there are a few things you can do to keep it in tip top condition. Start by removing any moss and weeds that has cropped up in the grass before treating it to some feed, then pop some seed down on any patchy areas and water.

Clean the patio/decking

If you’re planning on doing a lot of entertaining in your garden during the summer months, then cleaning your patio or decking area is a must. If you have a pressure washer then this shouldn’t take you too long and makes the world of difference! It freshens everything up instantly and will ensure the dining area of your garden is ready to welcome guests.

Get the BBQ cleaned and ready to go

If you have a BBQ then it’s essential to give it a good clean ready since it’s been sat unused for quite a few months. It’s recommended that you wash your barbecue grills by hand with washing up liquid, however if the grime doesn’t budge, you may need to use a proper BBQ cleaner to get the job done.

Clean up your garden furniture

Similarly to the BBQ, your outdoor furniture is likely to have been sat unused throughout the winter months, but giving them a quick scrub will have them looking brand new and ready to seat guests in no time. Depending on what type of furniture you have, you may also want to give seat covers and cushions a wash to freshen everything up.

Add colour

Now that the boring jobs have been done it’s a nice idea to add some colour back into the garden, which is easy to do. Simply plant some brightly coloured flowers into your borders, beds and any pots to brighten up the area. It will instantly feel more summery, even if the sun hasn’t decided to make an appearance yet!

Lighting

Adding some pretty lights to your outside space is an easy way to make the area feel cosier when spending evenings outside in the garden. Lights make the space feel relaxing, as well as making it look pretty once it gets dark, allowing you to enjoy the space well into the evening. Adding candles and oil lamps can also create a similar effect and also help keep the bugs away!

Soft furnishings

Another great way to create a cosy, outside space is by bringing the comfort of indoors, outside! There are lots of soft furnishings that are designed to be used in the garden, such as cushions and outdoor rugs. They are great for adding to that relaxed ambience and allow you and your guests to feel comfortable whilst basking in the sunshine.
