Published: 27/04/2021If you’re a sucker for a sweet treat whilst at the seaside then new ice-cream bar Swirls in Wells-next-the-Sea is bound to be up your street. With its bang on trend pastel colours, ‘Instagramable’ interior and many delights to try, what’s not to love?
Whether you fancy a traditional ice-cream, a unique flavoured sundae cup, or you want to enjoy a frozen cocktail in the beautiful North Norfolk sunshine, Swirls has something for everyone.
We think it’s so important to show support to new local businesses and with summer fast approaching, Swirl seemed the perfect choice for the next feature in our ‘Introducing…’ blog series. We have spoken to Mimi, the owner of Swirl, who gives us the ‘scoop’ on opening Swirl and what sets it apart from the competition.
Please introduce yourself!
My name is Mimi and I am from North Norfolk, I was a designer at Monica Vinader for 5 years and decided to take the leap of turning my soft serve dream into reality during the pandemic and open Swirl.
How long have you been open?
We opened in October half term 2020 then have been closed until Easter weekend, so it's all very new, but it's already been amazing and we are looking forward to hopefully a great summer!
What inspired you to open Swirl?
I love creating things that people love, food being one of them, so I developed our homemade soft serve whipped ice cream recipe and started to create ideas for the sundae cups. The interior and branding are all part of why I think people seem to love it.
What sweet treats do you offer - any unusual flavours?
We have a good selection of sundae cups and we will have specials on too. We are working on an ‘under the sea’ sundae cup with @thefemalefisherman as we speak! We have also just got our alcohol license, so we are currently serving frozen cocktails as well!
Do you cater for different dietary requirements?
We have already had a lot of requests for dairy free/vegan ice cream which is something we are working on.
What makes Swirl unique?
Our soft serve is all homemade, it's not out of a packet. It's made from Norfolk dairy whole milk and double cream and has less air than usual, making it taste creamier. Our sundae cups offer something different to the other ice cream shops in the town.
Are you dog friendly/do you offer anything for furry friends?
Dogs are welcome inside! We don’t offer anything dog friendly at the moment, although they do love a spoonful of our homemade soft serve as a special treat.
What attracted you to Wells-next-the-Sea?
I've grown up on the coast and think it is a great town. We are opposite The Golden Fleece pub and Staithe Street has such a good buzz about it, especially in the summer.
What is your favourite thing on the menu?
Probably the Eton Mess sundae cup washed down with a Frose! (Frozen rose and vodka slush cocktail!)
What do you love most about Norfolk?
Our amazing beaches and open countryside! I’m very lucky to live here full time.
Be sure to check out Swirl next time you pop down to Wells! You can also follow them over on Instagram and Facebook.
