Sowerbys Saturday Shoutout - Re.Source General Store

Published: 08/12/2021

In this week's Saturday Shoutout, Sowerbys talk to Resource - Norwich's first low waste general store and planet based cafe.

As we’re approaching the end of the year, our thoughts are heading towards the new year and how we can perhaps make changes to our lives.

Perhaps you’re wanting to be a bit kinder to the planet and switch some of your everyday items to more eco-friendly alternatives, or perhaps you want to pick up a new creative hobby.

A family run, low-waste vegan general store and café, Re.Source is based within the heart of Norwich city centre, giving you a place to resource your life, whilst helping the planet at the same time.

What is your name/role?

My name is Cata Parrish and I’m the Director of Re.Source General Store and Café.

Where are you based?

We're in the heart of the city on Timber Hill, two minutes from the market and Gentleman's Walk, and we serve those trying to reduce their negative impact on the planet and environment.

When did you open?

We opened in the April of 2019.

What does the business offer?

We are Norwich's 'zero waste' General Store and Cafe.

We're a place to resource yourself, your kitchen, your home, heart and the planet through unpackaged ethically produced food, fresh organically grown produce, household, kitchen and bathroom refills.

We recognise it might feel a little different to the plastic lined shelves of the supermarkets, and we're very happy about that. Most people come in and breathe a happy sigh of relief and comfort.

Just bring some containers from home - these can be take-out containers, tupperware, bags, anything anything have, they don't need to look pretty. Then you can fill them up and weigh them on our scales. We can help you if you want, and we even have paper bags if you've forgotten yours. It generally works our cheaper as you're buying the amount you want, not the amount the supermarket dictates to you. But sometimes the price of organic produce will be more. That's what happens when our food systems are weighted in the favour of big corporations instead of families. But we can change this. Together.

We also cook simple wholesome food for your lunch or coffee breaks, made in our tiny kitchen to help nourish you and your loved ones, and served upstairs in our homely sitting room, or outside watching the world go by on Timber Hill.

We offer nurturing food such as delicious soups and stews, Ploughwoman's platters, hearty seasonal salads, sandwiches, cakes, cookies and coffees, teas and cocoa.

Everything we make is plant based and also without gluten - although you can have locally made gluten bread we buy in from the bakers up the hill in your sandwiches and with your stews if you prefer.

We run workshops, groups and gatherings to support each of us in learning and sharing old skills such as mending, dyeing, fermenting, crochet, book club, writing club, climate change awareness and more.

We're a small family run business, open Tuesdays to Saturdays and we believe supporting each other is the way forward.
Our ethos is to do the thing that calls us and is worth doing regardless of the certainty of the outcome, and, to do what you can, where you are, with what you have.
