Renovations at Sowerbys Dereham

The branch has a fresh look to accommodate a growing team.

From family residence, to private school, a registry office and even a bed centre, Sowerbys’ Canterbury House has a unique and intriguing history.

When our Dereham branch opened back in 2007, we were a team of three. Now hosting up to 20 members of staff every day, it was time again to transform – and extend, our home on the high street.
For all the bad haircuts, overgrown beards and disastrous home-manicures, there was at least one thing that came out of lockdown looking better than ever - our home décor.

What else to do with those seemingly endless days inside than slip, slap and slop paint, re-plaster walls and succumb to that dangerously-too-easy click of the ‘buy’ button on home furnishing websites?

While the nation redecorated homes, Sowerbys’ joined the trend, revamping the historic Canterbury House, for our growing Dereham team.

Like all the our branches, Canterbury House is deep rooted in the community with its own fascinating history and story to tell.

When Sowerbys purchased the property back in 2007 it came with a varied history; originally being someone’s home, then a private school, a registry office and a bed shop.

It was in need of some tender loving care and major renovations transformed the building to begin its chapter with Sowerbys.

Back then the branch was made up of just three people and has grown substantially over the past 14 years.

Today, around 20 members of our team can be found bustling away inside, helping clients find their dream home – and so, an extension and spruce up was needed.

Now the final touches of paint have dried and we are delighted to welcome visitors inside to see the refurbishment.

With eight of Sowerbys’ nine branches being Grade II listed buildings, we know how important it is to invest in renovating our county’s historic properties; preserving them and stories of their past for people to enjoy today, and generations to come.

Lloyd Sandy, Managing Director, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have completed the refurbishment of Canterbury House in Dereham bringing together the integrity of this beautiful grade II listed building with 21st century technology.

“Customer experience has been at the forefront of our minds when it came to the design; we’re delighted to have created a really welcoming environment whilst being the home for our sales, lettings, new homes, marketing and senior management teams.

“Sowerbys are proud of our high streets and endeavour to invest in them; we understand the important role they play in creating communities across Norfolk. Simply put, if we don’t all join together and look after our high street businesses, shops, schools and the entrepreneurs that are desperately trying to make their way in life, will all be affected.”

Special thanks goes to New Space Builders, who renovated a whole floor of the building, expanding our space to make room for new members of the team as we continue to grow.

It was then completely redecorated both inside and out by the brilliant Betts and Co who worked their magic with a fresh lick of paint and the interior has been styled beautifully by the wonderful Collette at Homestagers.

To provide the finishing touch, the lovely Nancy from Plants for Living added some fantastic plants into the office space to really liven it up.

Known for our bespoke property videos, we are excited to showcase new digital screens in our front window displays as part of the new look.

Lloyd added: “A clear criteria for buyers today is to purchase a property either in, or near a thriving village or town - so please join the Sowerbys vision to be ambassadors of our local communities and allow them to thrive.”

“The door is always open and if anyone would like to have a look round to see for themselves what this amazing building offers – please do come in.”

...and if all that wasn’t exciting enough, as the Sowerbys’ family grows we’re about to undertake another historic property in King's Lynn… this space:
