This summer marks a very special anniversary for one of Norwich’s most beloved restaurants. Since opening its doors in June 2015,Benedicts, led by the ever-passionate chef-proprietor Richard Bainbridge and his wife and business partner Katja, has become a cornerstone of the city’s now-flourishing dining scene.
With a steadfast commitment to seasonal cooking, warm hospitality and an atmosphere that feels like home, Benedicts has not only weathered the challenges of the last decade, it has thrived. As Richard reflects, “One of mine and Katja’s greatest achievements is that we’re still waving the flag for Norfolk after ten years.” It’s a sentiment that perfectly captures the spirit of the local food movement: pride, passion, and perseverance.
Richard, who many will recognise from his appearances on Great British Menu, speaks with genuine warmth about the journey. “From day one, we wanted to create a restaurant that respected produce and put people first, our team and our guests.” A decade later, that ethos still runs through everything Benedicts does. The restaurant remains a champion for Norfolk’s local producers and an inspiring presence within the Norwich Lanes community.
And what a transformation the city has seen. “When we started, there wasn’t too much of a culinary scene in Norwich. Now it’s thriving, with independents like Farmyard, The Tipsy Vegan, L’Hexagone and Yalm bringing so much energy.” Reflecting on his place in this vibrant community, Richard adds with a smile, “I now feel like one of the old dogs.”
Looking ahead, the vision is clear: keep evolving, keep improving, and keep showing the world why Norwich is a fine city. “We just want to keep pushing ourselves, getting better every day. But, like all of us, we can’t do this without local support and that’s what makes this place so special.”
To celebrate the ten-year milestone, Benedicts will be hosting a very special celebration, inviting current and past staff to mark the occasion. Guests can also expect to see a few cherished classic dishes return to the menu, with plenty of surprises along the way. As ever, keep an eye on their social media for announcements.
Dining Highlights Across Norfolk
It’s not just Norwich making culinary headlines. We’re thrilled to see Meadowsweet in Holt and The Neptune in Old Hunstanton named among Harden's Top 100 Most Acclaimed Restaurants for 2025, placing at numbers 36 and 58 respectively, further proof of Norfolk’s place on the national food map.
Elsewhere, Vishal Gohel inspired by his Gujarati heritage is turning heads with his 2025 supper club series around North Norfolk.
And in the Norwich Lanes, a new addition is drawing steak lovers in. George Colley and Natty Crothers, the team behind Yard, Brick Pizza and The Weavers Arms, have opened Tallow a walk-in only steak restaurant that’s already creating a buzz.
