Norfolk... known for big skies and charming coastlines - and apparently, a handful of half-truths too...
Whether you’ve grown up here, recently moved in or are just visiting, you’ve probably heard a few myths about this part of East Anglia.
So let’s set the record straight. Here are some of the most common Norfolk myths, debunked.
Norfolk is completely flat
Truth-ish: It’s more flat than some counties, yes, but it’s not a pancake.
While it’s certainly not mountainous, Norfolk isn’t entirely flat. Head to the north Norfolk coast or take a walk through the Waveney Valley and you’ll quickly discover hills, slopes and beautiful rolling views. The landscape might not be dramatic, but it’s definitely varied.
It takes ages to get anywhere from Norfolk
False: Remote doesn’t mean cut off.
It’s true that there’s no motorway, but Norfolk is far from inaccessible.
Norwich has direct train links to London in under two hours, and road upgrades like the A11 have made driving in and out much easier.
There's even an airport to link you to Europe from Norwich... and Stansted is only an hour and a bit drive.
But let’s be honest – once you’re here, you might not be in a rush to leave anyway.
It’s all just fields and tractors
False: There’s more to Norfolk than farming.
Yes, agriculture is a big part of Norfolk life – and always will be. But there’s a lot more going on.
Norwich is a UNESCO City of Literature with a thriving arts scene.
The region is home to growing sectors like tech, energy and design. There’s space for both harvest festivals and hackathons here.
We have Royal estates, stately homes, beaches, woodland and shopping malls!
Everyone knows everyone
In the best way: ...it’s time to let some stereotypes go...
While we have a huge sense of community and friendly neighbours - Norfolk is a diverse and modern county.
It's home to people from all backgrounds and walks of life, drawn here by its beauty, creativity and quality of living.
Of course, grab a coffee or dinner in your local cafe and you're sure to be welcomed as a regular though.
The Norfolk Broads are natural
Nope: They’re man-made - and fascinating.
Many people assume the Broads are natural rivers and lakes, but they were actually dug out by hand in medieval times as peat excavations.
Over time, they filled with water and evolved into one of the UK’s most iconic wetland landscapes. A perfect mix of history and nature.
It’s only nice in summer
False: Norfolk is stunning all year round!
Summer is lovely here, of course, but so is a winter walk on the beach or a spring afternoon in the woods.
Autumn brings its own beauty too. From seal spotting to cosy pubs to snowy cathedral cities, Norfolk knows how to do every season well.
It’s only for posh people and second homes
Nu-uh: Norfolk is for everyone.
You may have read articles about second homes in our holiday hot-spots but times have changed!
Norfolk is far from exclusive. It’s a working, living county full of character and contrast. Artists, farmers, students, retirees and families all call it home. With excellent transport links and 21st century connectivity, people choose to stick around, commute or work remote.
For every stately home there’s a community market, a beach hut, or a bustling high street or a cosy cottage. Norfolk is beautifully mixed, and we're proud of it.
It’s stuck in the past
Well, we like to remember history but: we are moving forward.
With its medieval lanes, heritage sites and market towns, Norfolk has deep roots. But it’s not standing still.
From creative start-ups and eco businesses to forward-thinking arts projects and inclusive events, Norfolk is quietly evolving – without losing its charm.
So… are you ready to make a move?
Norfolk isn’t the slow, stuck-in-time place the clichés would have you believe. Sure, we’ve got winding lanes and sea air, but that’s not the full picture.
This is a county that’s quietly creative, fiercely independent, and powered by community. Where you can work remotely or hop on a train to the city - and still be home in time for a sunset stroll.
It’s the kind of place you move to, not just visit.
But shhh… don’t shout too loud about it. We like it just the way it is.
