A day well spent in Downham Market
Tucked between the Fens and the West Norfolk countryside, Downham Market is the sort of place that rewards a little time spent exploring.
Known as the 'Gingerbread Town' for its distinctive carrstone buildings, there's plenty packed into its compact centre, from independent shops and good food to centuries of history.
Start the morning with coffee and something freshly baked. The Pantry is a favourite for homemade bakes and hearty breakfasts, while Mabel The Bakery has built a loyal following for its artisan sourdough, seasonal pastries and locally sourced ingredients.
From there, take your time wandering through town. Reeds Homestore is something of a Downham institution for interiors and homewares, while Room 8 Interiors is filled with carefully chosen vintage finds and decorative pieces. Visit on a Friday or Saturday and you can also catch the town's traditional market, with a history stretching all the way back to 1046.
Lunch is another good reason to linger. The Norfolk Cheese Co & Delicatessen celebrates some of the county's finest produce with local cheeses, charcuterie and wine, while Allium serves modern British dishes with an emphasis on seasonal, local ingredients.
Then walk it off with part of the 2km Gingerbread Trail, taking in the town's historic architecture and 1887 Town Hall before calling into the Discover Downham Heritage Centre. If there's time to venture further, the wetlands at Welney, Church Farm at Stow Bardolph and Watatunga Wildlife Reserve are all within easy reach.
Independent, characterful and surrounded by some beautiful West Norfolk countryside, Downham Market has all the ingredients for a day very well spent.
