A new chapter for one of Norfolk’s favourite bakeries

There’s something magnetic about Norfolk’s new generation of destination bakeries. They’re no longer simply places to pick up a loaf or grab a coffee, but spaces designed to make you linger, shaped as much by their surroundings as what’s on the plate.

The Old Stores has arrived in Fring, marking the award-winning microbakery’s third location. This latest outpost brings together its signature artisan baking with a carefully curated pantry, local produce and a lighter, Scandinavian-influenced menu. Set within beautifully restored estate buildings, it has a character all of its own while feeling perfectly at home in the village.

For co-founder Aga King, the relationship with the estate goes back some time. When the opportunity to take over the former workshops and barn arose, the team immediately saw the potential in the characterful building. Its historic fabric also presented a few challenges, prompting them to rethink what The Old Store at Fring could be.

The result is a space with a stronger retail focus, with shelves stocked with Norfolk produce, wines, homewares and carefully chosen ingredients, alongside a lighter, more seasonal menu of open sandwiches, salads, breakfast bowls and filled croissants.

And then there’s the setting. Outdoor seating within the estate grounds gives the café a relaxed feel, while contemporary styling, original flint and chalk walls and large-scale paintings by Ringstead artist David Lendrum add to the atmosphere.

With the team now focused on developing the potential of its existing sites, there are already exciting plans for Fring, from a bigger deli offering and more products made in-house to events and further development of the pantry.
