Award-winning singer and performer Beverley Knight has been travelling to Norfolk for more than two decades, and while her first impressions were a world away from city life, the county has clearly won her over.

Known as the UK’s Queen of Soul, Beverley first visited Norfolk when she performed at the UEA in the early 2000s. Her connection to the county grew even stronger after meeting her husband, who is originally from Norwich, leading to regular trips back and forth for both family visits and performances.

“I remember thinking how different it was from anything I knew,” Beverley says. “You suddenly realise you’re definitely not in the urban sprawl anymore.”

Last summer, Beverley performed at Heritage Live at Sandringham Estate, supporting Michael Bublé in front of a crowd of 33,000.

“It was glorious,” she says. “The setting is beautiful, so green, and the audience was full of joy. I loved every minute.”

This year, Beverley is set to return to East Anglia for two more performances, including a show at Norwich Theatre Royal, a venue she’ll be performing at for the first time.

When she does get downtime in the county, Beverley already has a few favourite Norfolk spots. She recommends cultural landmarks including Norwich Castle, Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Puppet Theatre, while nature lovers should head to Thetford Forest for walking, concerts and a change of pace.

For relaxation, Beverley suggests Sprowston Manor for a massage and swim.

A strong advocate for health and fitness, Beverley also makes wellbeing a priority while touring.

“I don’t need a gym to work out,” she says. “I can do bodyweight exercises anywhere. I have to keep myself fit and keep my voice in shape.”

And when asked to sum up Norfolk in just three words?

“Pretty, coastal and warm,” she says adding that it’s not just the landscape she loves, but the people too.

“Everyone is really friendly. Even the accent feels warm.”

With another Norfolk return on the horizon, it’s clear Beverley’s connection to the county is stronger than ever.
